How can a tiny seed turn into a big green plant?
A seed drinks water from the soil and wakes up inside. A tiny root pushes down to hold the new plant and take in more water.
Next, a little shoot pushes up through the soil toward the light. The shoot grows leaves that catch sunlight.
With water, air, and sunlight, the leaves make food for the plant. The plant grows taller and may one day make new seeds.
So that's how a seed begins: roots grow down, and a shoot grows up. Then leaves use sunlight to help the plant grow!
For grown-ups: the science
Seeds use water to start growing roots and shoots, then leaves use sunlight to help the plant grow.
A seed contains a tiny young plant and stored food. When it gets enough water, oxygen, and the right temperature, it begins germinating: the first root emerges, then the shoot grows upward. After leaves open, the plant uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide from air to make sugars through photosynthesis.
