Why do we have eyebrows?
Talk about it together
What do your eyebrows look like when you make your silliest face?
What about...?
Ask your child's own questionTranscript
Have you ever wondered why little rows of hair sit above your eyes?
Rain or sweat can slide down your forehead toward your eyes. Eyebrows help send some drops to the sides instead.
Eyebrows also make a small bit of shade above your eyes. That can help when bright sunlight comes from overhead.
Your eyebrows can move up, down, and together. They help show others when you are surprised, puzzled, or happy.
So that's why we have eyebrows! They help protect our eyes and help our faces show things.
For grown-ups: the science
Eyebrows help keep some rain, sweat, and bright light away from our eyes, and they help show what our faces are doing.
Eyebrows can deflect sweat and rain away from the eyes because of their hair, shape, and position on the brow. They may also reduce light from above slightly and are important for facial expression and social communication.
