Why is grass green? Let's wonder together!
Grass uses sunlight to help it grow. Inside each blade is green stuff that catches the light.
Sunlight has many colors in it. The green stuff sends green light back to our eyes.
Our eyes see that green light, so grass looks green. The green stuff also helps grass make its own food.
So that's why grass is green! Its green parts use sunlight and send green light to our eyes.
For grown-ups: the science
Grass looks green because its green parts use sunlight and send green light to our eyes.
Grass contains chlorophyll, a green pigment in chloroplasts. Chlorophyll absorbs mostly red and blue wavelengths of light for photosynthesis and reflects or transmits more green wavelengths, which reach our eyes. Photosynthesis uses light energy to make sugars from carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen.
