how does computer ram work?

この動画の日本語版

For grown-ups: the science

RAM is fast, temporary computer memory that holds information while the computer is using it.

RAM means random-access memory. It stores data and instructions that the processor needs soon, allowing much faster access than long-term storage such as an SSD or hard drive. Most RAM is volatile, meaning its contents are lost when power stops; saved files remain in nonvolatile storage.

A computer is opening a picture and playing a song. Where does it keep what it needs right now?

Inside, RAM is a group of tiny electronic parts. They hold bits of information while the computer is working.

The computer quickly puts the picture, song, and game pieces into RAM. It can reach RAM much faster than long-term storage.

RAM needs electricity to remember the information. When the computer turns off, RAM clears and the saved files stay in storage.

So RAM is the computer's fast, temporary workspace. It helps the computer use what it needs right now.
