A huge asteroid crashed into Earth, and the world turned into a hard place to live.
About 66 million years ago, a large asteroid is thought to have struck near what is now Mexico, sending huge amounts of dust and soot into the sky. With less sunlight, plant growth and food chains were badly affected, leading to a mass extinction of many living things, including dinosaurs other than birds. The asteroid impact is seen as the leading cause, but scientists are also studying whether volcanic activity may have added to the environmental changes.

Dinosaurs used to walk all over the Earth. So why did they disappear?
A long, long time ago, a huge rock crashed into Earth. After it hit, dust spread high into the sky.
The dust blocked the sun's light, so everything grew dim. Plants had trouble growing, and there was less food.
That time with little food lasted a long, long while. Many dinosaurs found it hard to keep on living.
After the asteroid hit and everything changed, that's why so many dinosaurs disappeared.
