Bats sleep upside down because their feet grip easily, and dropping helps them start flying.
Most bats roost hanging head-down because their specialized tendons let the toes flex and grip with little muscular effort. This position also allows many bats to launch into flight by releasing their grip and dropping briefly, which is useful because their hind limbs are not positioned for an easy ground takeoff.

A bat’s feet can grip a branch tightly when it hangs. Its toes lock without using much energy.
Hanging lets a bat rest where many animals cannot reach it. It can tuck safely under a branch or in a cave.
When it is time to fly, a bat lets go and drops a little. Then its wings open, and it can fly away.
So bats sleep upside down because their feet are built for hanging. It also helps them take off quickly.
