Look at that raccoon’s dark fur around its eyes. Why does it look like a little mask?
A raccoon’s face has dark fur around its eyes, with lighter fur beside it. This is its natural fur pattern, not a mask it puts on.
The dark fur may help cut down bright light bouncing into its eyes. That can help a raccoon see when it looks for food at night.
Each raccoon is born with this eye pattern as its fur grows. The pattern may also help raccoons notice one another’s faces.
So, raccoons do not wear masks. Their dark eye fur is part of their natural coat!
