Why do we blink?
Talk about it together
When do you notice yourself blinking the most?
What about...?
Ask your child's own questionTranscript
Why do our eyes blink all by themselves? Let's wonder!
Your eyelids close and open very fast, even when you are busy playing. A blink spreads a tiny wet layer over your eyes.
That wet layer keeps your eyes smooth and helps wash away little bits of dust. It helps your eyes see clearly and feel comfy.
Sometimes you blink extra fast when wind or bright light comes near. Your eyelids help protect your eyes, like little doors.
So that's why we blink. Blinks keep our eyes wet, clean, and protected!
For grown-ups: the science
We blink to keep our eyes wet, clean, and safe.
Blinking spreads tears across the eye surface, helping keep the cornea moist, smooth, and clear. It also helps remove small particles and is a protective reflex to wind, bright light, and things approaching the eye.
